Roy expects extension from Avalanche

DENVER -- Colorado Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy could
become an unrestricted agent if he doesn't sign a contract
extension by July 1, but he said he wants to finish his career in
Denver.

"My family loves it here, I love it here, and this organization
has always treated me very well," Roy said. "For me, there is not
a better place to play."
The three-time Stanley Cup winner is nearing a record 448 wins
in the NHL, as well as the end of his contract.
Roy signed a two-year, $15 million contract extension midway
through the 1998-99 season in a deal that included a partial
no-trade clause.
Roy did not bring up the subject of another such clause Tuesday,
perhaps because of the refusal of general manager Pierre Lacroix to
grant team captain Joe Sakic such a clause over the summer.
Sakic had said he wanted to finish his career in Colorado, but
only with a contract that guaranteed he could. Talks with Lacroix
broke off over the no-trade issue, and Sakic may leave for free
agency next summer.
Other players have received contract extensions, though.
Defenseman Adam Foote inked a four-year, $17 million extension
last week.
Lacroix and Roy's agent Bob Sauve, Lacroix's former business
partner, had not had talks yet.
"In my case, there's no rush, but I'm very happy here and it's
up to the organization in this matter," Roy said.
