Leopold feels good, but team places him on IR

SportsTicker

CALGARY, Alberta -- Hobey Baker winner Jordan Leopold will miss the start of the regular season after the Calgary Flames placed the defenseman on injured reserve Wednesday.

Leopold has not skated since Saturday, when he took an elbow to the chin from Daniel Cleary in a preseason game against the Edmonton Oilers.

"We're taking it slow right now," Leopold told the Calgary Herald. "I feel good, I'm aware. I'm attentive. I'm not groggy. It's frustrating because it is a head injury and there's nothing you can do."

Leopold's solid play in the preseason convinced the Flames to trade defenseman Derek Morris to the Colorado Avalanche last week. Calgary sent Morris, left wing Dean McAmmond and center Jeff Shantz to the defending Northwest Division champions for centers Chris Drury and Stephane Yelle.

Leopold helped Minnesota capture the NCAA championship as a senior last season, collecting 20 goals and 28 assists in 44 games.

The Flames also designated right wing Ladislav Kohn for assignment. Signed as a free agent after spending part of last season with the Detroit Red Wings, the 27-year-old can be sent to Saint John of the American Hockey League or returned to his native Czech Republic.
