Chris Tanev gets 5-year extension

The Vancouver Canucks have signed defenseman Chris Tanev to a five-year contract extension.

The deal is worth $22.25 million, a source told ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun.

"Chris has developed into an excellent NHL defenseman and is an extremely important part of our team," Canucks general manager Jim Benning said Tuesday in a statement announcing the deal. "He's a player you want on the ice in the most critical points of a game and we're excited about having him with our group as we continue to play to win today, with an eye to the future."

Tanev, 25, has recorded 16 points (2-14-16) and 10 penalty minutes in his sixth season with the Canucks.

Vancouver (42-26-4) has 88 points and is situated in a tie for sixth in the Western Conference playoff race.
