After months of anticipation, and patience from Valentine Holmes, it was somehow appropriate that the former State of Origin star was made to wait just that little bit longer to make his bow for the New York Jets.
A thunderstorm blew into Metlife Stadium at the end of the first quarter, causing a suspension to the game against the Giants of nearly an hour.
Already up against it to secure that elusive spot in the 53 man roster, at sixth in the running back depth chart for the Jets, Holmes had to wait until deep into the third quarter to get his opportunity, as fellow running backs Elijah McGuire, Ty Montgomery and Trenton Cannon shared the early snaps.
But as the storm cleared, the opportunity eventually opened up for the former Cronulla Sharks flyer.
With 14:43 left on the clock in the fourth, number 39 trotted out with the offensive unit.
A simple run up the middle after a handoff from Luke Falk for a 2 yard gain, and Valentine Holmes was away.
A second carry for a one yard loss came next snap, and then Holmes headed to the sidelines as the Jets went three and out.
It wasn't in the Christian Wade league of impacts who scored a 65-yard touchdown for the Buffalo Bills, but it was a start.
A few series later, and Holmes was back in the action and back with an impact, with his most impressive moments of the night.
Successive short receptions from Quarterback Luke Falk found him in space, he found yards after the catch, and gained two successive first downs. Good hands, good footwork and great for the confidence.
A third carry for 5 yards shortly before a third first down reception.
The air more profitable than the lane so far.
But like that, the night was over. A night you could describe as tidy and competent if unspectacular.
It's the first step on the road for Valentine Holmes.
The destination is still unknown, but the journey has now truly begun.
