Titans' anti-vax duo Bryce Cartwright and Albert Kelly must have flu shot by Thursday

Gold Coast Titans duo Bryce Cartwright and Albert Kelly have until Thursday to have the flu shot, the club confirmed on Tuesday evening.

The Queensland Government has not wavered from its stipulation that any NRL player based in the state must have a flu vaccination in a bid to firstly train, and then play when the competition resumes on May 28, except for situations where there was a "medical contraindication."

That condition was reinforced by the Queensland's Chief Medical officer Jeannette Young on Tuesday, who confirmed the Government would not allow objecting players to sign a medical waiver as has been the case with other players who have refused the flu jab in New South Wales.

Cartwright and Kelly now look to be left with little other choice but to either take the vaccination or to sit out indefinitely as the NRL inches towards a playing return amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"The Gold Coast Titans have made formal requests to Bryce Cartwright and Brian Kelly to obtain up-to-date influenza and, as required, pneumococcal vaccinations," a club statement said.

"Doing so will enable each player to meet the requirements of the Queensland State Government's protocols allowing Queensland-based NRL clubs to train and play.

"In turn, this will allow both players to resume training and to play with the Titans when the NRL Telstra Premiership resumes on May 28.

"Both players have been asked to notify the club of their agreement with this direction by Thursday, 14 May."

Players based in NSW, or the Melbourne Storm, who have not been vaccinated for influenza will not be eligible for NRL games in Queensland given the State Government's position.
