Brisbane Broncos' Tesi Niu faces driving charge

NRL

Kevin Walters' assertion that Brisbane do not have an issue with off-field behaviour has taken a further knock with the news that teenager Tesi Niu will face court on a serious driving charge.

The Broncos released a statement on Thursday evening saying they have informed the NRL's integrity unit Niu will appear in court on Friday charged with unlicensed driving.

The 19-year-old's court appearance is the latest in a number of disciplinary issues to have plagued Brisbane in recent months.

Star forward Payne Haas was last month handed a three-match ban and a $50,000 fine following an integrity unit investigation into his abusive run-in with NSW police in Tweed Heads in January.

The NRL also issued injured centre Kotoni Staggs with a breach notice in January following a run-in with a man which sparked a 2020 pub brawl.

Last year the Broncos endured a miserable season on and off the field, with Tevita Pangai Jnr almost having his contract ripped up following a biosecurity breach, while coaches and players were fined on separate occasions over not maintaining COVID protocols.

"Every player in the NRL is aware they've got to take some responsibility around their behaviour. At the end of the day that's what needs to happen," coach Walters said at the time of Haas's recent infraction.

"We don't have a behavioural issue here."

Niu played six games for the Broncos last season, mainly at fullback.

Brisbane kick-off their 2021 NRL campaign against Parramatta at Suncorp Stadium on Friday March 12.
