SBW mentors Roosters super talent Suaalii

The Sydney Roosters are hailing Sonny Bill Williams as the perfect mentor for the NRL's teenage sensation Joseph Suaalii.

Superstar fullback James Tedesco on Monday revealed that Williams made a rare appearance at Roosters headquarters last week, apparently as a voluntary advisor after his playing cameo last year.

"I don't know how much coaching he did, but he's definitely a mentor for a lot of the guys, especially the Polynesian young kids," Tedesco said.

"He had a few words of advice for them and just said hello to us. Didn't do much coaching."

The youngest of the Roosters' Polynesian contingent, of course, is 17-year-old Suaalii - who has arrived at the Roosters as the league's hottest teenage prospect since Williams debuted for Canterbury at 18 in 2004, having been the youngest player ever signed to play NRL.

"Obviously he's pretty similar to Sonny," Tedesco said.

"When he came through, there was a lot of hype about (Williams) and a lot of talk so I guess Sonny can relay a bit of advice to Joey having been in that situation before.

Suaalii doesn't turn 18 until August 1 and there's been much debate about when the super talent should be allowed to play NRL.

Tedesco isn't buying into it, claiming the prodigy has more than enough positive influences around him at Bondi Junction, led by Williams and master coach Trent Robinson.

"There's no rush for Joey. He's a young kid and everyone's talking about him, but there's really no rush," Tedesco said.

"He's got to still develop a lot and, when he plays, he'll be ready.

"But I don't know if there needs to be a vote or rule changes or anything."

One of the Roosters' most experienced players, winger Brett Morris, said Suaalii had already shown maturity beyond his tender years.

"Joseph himself is a pretty grounded kid. He's here to learn and we haven't had to say a whole lot to him," Morris said.

"We've seen the press he's been getting but he's a really good kid, he wants to work hard and I don't think that stuff affects him too much.

"There's a lot more cameras than when Sonny started but with social media and all that sort of stuff it will be good for him to have Sonny helping out.

"He's a good sounding board for Joseph."

It's unknown where Robinson plans to play the towering talent.

Standing 196cm and weighing in at 98kg, Suaalii's preferred position is fullback - but he won't be playing there anytime soon, unless Tedesco is injured.

"I don't know where we'll see him," Morris said.

"He's very talented. He could fit anywhere in that backline.

"Very skilful, moves very well and has got that big body frame as well, which helps.

"It'll be interesting to see where he pops up."
