Lindsey Vonn planning to retire after 2018-19 World Cup season

Skiing great Lindsey Vonn says the 2018-19 World Cup season will be her last.

Speaking Thursday in New York, Vonn announced her intentions to retire after the upcoming campaign, regardless of whether she breaks the all-time World Cup wins record.

"Physically, I've gotten to the point where it doesn't make sense," Vonn, who turns 34 next week, said at an event for Chase Ink in Manhattan. "I really would like to be active when I'm older, so I have to look to the future and not just be so focused on what's in front of me."

Vonn, in a text message to ESPN's Wayne Drehs, confirmed the news later Thursday: "Last run. It's time."

Vonn picked up her 82nd World Cup win in March, a downhill victory that moved her within four of the all-time mark of 86, set by Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark.

"If I get it (the record), that would be a dream come true," Vonn said. "If I don't, I think I've had an incredibly successful career no matter what. I'm still the all-time winningest female skier."

A four-time World Cup champion, Vonn has battled several injuries in the past, notably ones to her right knee that forced her out of the 2014 Olympics in Sochi.
