Jyothi Surekha Vennam and the women's compound team won a bronze medal each for India at the Archery World Championships in Den Bosch in the Netherlands on Saturday.

Vennam beat Yesim Bostan of Turkey in a tiebreaker shootoff to finish third in the women's individual compound event. Both the players had been tied at 145-145 after five ends, before the Indian shot a 10 to edge out her rival, who scored 9 in the shootoff.

Vennam is the first Indian to medal in the women's compound event at the Worlds. This is also her first individual medal at a World Championships or a World Cup.

Earlier, the women's compound team of Vennam, Muskan Kirar and Raj Kaur won bronze by defeating the Turkish team of Yesim Bostan, Gizem Elmaagacli and Ipek Tomruk by a score of 229-226.

India were trailing by two points (55-57) after the first end. They overtook Turkey by the second end as they hit a bulls-eye and three 10s in the next six arrows (two from each player) to take a three-point lead (58-53). The third end was tied with both teams scoring 58 points each as India continued to maintain their lead. The fourth end concluded in similar fashion as both teams tied again with 58 points.

The Indian women's compound team is ranked third in the world, four spots above Turkey. This is the second time that India have medalled in this event at the Worlds, having won silver in the last edition in Mexico City.

India are already assured of another medal at this year's World Championships. On Thursday, the men's recurve team of Atanu Das, Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav had made the final -- which will be held on Sunday -- and also secured an Olympic team quota.

Compound archery is not an Olympic event and, therefore, no quotas will be distributed for it.
