Sally Pearson retires due to injuries

An inability to conquer her injury demons has led Sally Pearson to announce a shock retirement from athletics less than a year out from the Tokyo Olympics.

The 32-year-old's most recent injury was a hamstring blow in July and Pearson said her body simply was unable to cope with the training load of a professional athlete on her Instagram account.

"I am here to let you all know that I have decided to retire from my sport of athletics," she posted.

"It has been a long 16 years, but also a fun and exciting 16 years. My body has decided it is time to let it go, and move forward onto a new direction."

Pearson won gold in the 100m hurdles at the London Olympics, an event she also won at two Commonwealth Games.

She also won world championship titles in 2011 and 2017.
