Swimming coach sacked in Goa after molestation allegations

Olympic Sports

A Goa-based swimming coach has been sacked after a minor accused him of molesting her.

"I've taken a strong view of the incident," Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted on Thursday. "The Goa Swimming Association has terminated the contract of coach Surajit Ganguly. I'm asking the Swimming Federation of India to ensure that this coach is not employed anywhere in India."

A purported video of the crime had earlier gone viral on social media. The 15-year-old girl trained under Ganguly.

The GSA confirmed that Ganguly's contract had been terminated. "...we terminated Surajit's contract immediately after watching the video," GSA secretary Syed Abdul Majid told PTI. "Both the girl and the coach are from Bengal."

The GSA had appointed Ganguly for its Mapusa facility about two and a half years ago. "We had appointed him because he had a good track record as a coach," Majid said. "There have been no prior complaints against him."

The West Bengal Police confirmed that the girl had lodged a complaint on Wednesday. "But since the case falls under the Goa police jurisdiction, it has been transferred there," a police official said in Kolkata.
