Greece's artistic swimming team ruled out of Tokyo Olympics because of COVID-19

Greece's artistic swimming squad has been ruled out of the Tokyo Olympics because of a COVID-19 outbreak in the team.

There are five positive cases in the 12-person delegation. The remaining team members have been placed in isolation outside of the Olympic Village.

The Greek team had been quarantined in Japan on arrival earlier in July after one of their assistants tested positive; the outbreak has spread, leading to its withdrawal.

One athlete tested positive on Monday while another three returned positive tests on Tuesday, ruling the team out and forcing the athletes into quarantine, according to Reuters.

"We proposed to the Greek NOC that the seven [remaining members] should immediately be transferred to a holding facility and they accepted," Tokyo 2020 spokesperson Masa Takaya said on Wednesday. "All seven were moved out from the village yesterday.

"Their artistic swimmers did not compete in duet events and they are also no longer eligible to participate in the team event. We wish them a speedy recovery."
