Tennessee Titan QB Steve McNair hasn't been getting much respect from opposing defensive coordinators this season. Teams have been stacking the box in an effort to stop running back Eddie George and force McNair to beat them on his own.

The Steelers will not exercise this option for several reasons. The first of which is McNair's performance last week, when he scorched the League's second-ranked pass defense for five passing TD's without the distraction of an interception. McNair displayed his pocket passing ability, as he checked off to several different receivers.

Steeler defensive coordinator John Haslett also knows the majority of McNair's weapons are healthy again. WR Yancy Thigpen's return has provided McNair with his favorite target and a deep threat to stretch opponent's secondaries. In McNair's five worst performances this season, Thigpen was nursing a seriously soar ankle and McNair found himself forcing balls into covered receivers as a result.

Frank Wycheck is also now back to 100%, after being hampered by a sprained MCL for almost two months. Although Wycheck has been playing, his ability to get open has been hurt by his injury.

Pittsburgh's poor secondary play is also why coach Haslett won't commit multiple defenders to the LOS. The Steelers secondary has yielded upwards of 20 passing plays of more then 25 yards and suffered multiple injuries throughout the season. Look for Pittsburgh to blitz often on 3rd downs -- Jacksonville didn't blitz McNair often and he wasn't sacked once. McNair's ample time in the pocket led to him completing passes to eight different receivers, (all five of his TD's were thrown to different Titans).

On the ground, Tennessee should be able to put up some serious numbers, especially in light of McNair's last performance. The Steeler rushing defense is ranked 11th in the league, so don't expect to see them rolling over anytime soon. But with Steelers NT Joel Steed out, coupled with the exceptional line play of Titan OT's Brad Hopkins and Jon Runyan, the Titans should be able to move the ball on land.

The nose tackle position in the 3-4 defensive set is pivotal and reserve second year player Jeremy Staat isn't giving the Steeler front the penetration they need in the middle. RB Eddie George and the Titans are averaging 115 yards a game on the ground, and George's ability to wear down a defensive unit matches up well against the Steelers damaged 3-4 defensive scheme. With the exception of ILB Levon Kirkland, Pittsburgh's defense has been playing soft against the run.

Both of these teams come into this week 17 finale coming off important victories for their respective franchises, the Steelers breaking a six-game losing streak at home against the Panthers and the Titans beating up on the first-place Jags 41-14 at Adelphia Stadium.

Expect the Titan defensive front to be up to the task against the Steeler running attack when Tennessee travels to Pittsburgh this weekend. The Titan defense is ranked 12th against the run this season, yielding 94 yards per game. However, defensive tackles Josh Evans and Jason Fisk have been stingy of late against the run and just a few feet away, ends Jevon Kearse and Kenny Holmes are far from generous.

Up front, the Steelers will be looking for another sound performance out of RT Shar Pourdanesh, who did an exceptional job of neutralizing Carolina DE Kevin Green last week in his first start as a Steeler. Pourdanesh let Green's zealous upfield approach take him out of plays when blocking for Huntley and Bettis, expect him to do the same against Titan rookie Kearse this week, as Kearse shares the same thought process off the ball as Green.

On the other side Pittsburgh's Wayne Gandy is notorious for getting knocked off the ball at the point of attack, but has improved on his first step when run-blocking and will need to keep it up against DE Kenny Holmes on the left side. Holmes isn't much of a run stopper, but he's quick off the ball and will make plays if he beats Gandy off the snap.

The scary thing about running the ball against the Titans is their 46-scheme. Coordinator Gregg Williams promotes upfield play by his front, because he feels his linebackers are good enough to take away cutback lanes and most of the time they are, (see last week's performance against Jacksonville).

Veteran QB Mike Tomczak got his first win of the season last week, but he was successful mostly as a caretaker, throwing for a mere 94 yards. Tomczak hasn't had a breakout performance yet this season and it won't come this on Sunday.

Titan CB's Samari Rolle and Denard Walker match up well with Pittsburgh's receivers, Hines Ward and Troy Edwards. Rolle's as fast as they come at corner, so he'll draw the assignment of covering the speedy Troy Edwards and Walker's solid technique will lead to him shuting down the crafty Ward.

What really hurts the Steelers against Tennessee is their lack of a threat at TE. Injuries to TE's Mark Bruener and his backup Mitch Lyons have left Matt Cushing as the starter against the Titans. Cushing doesn't have the speed to work the middle of the field, so safeties Blane Bishop and Marcus Robinson will be able to focus on helping out Rolle and Walker with the Steeler wide receivers.

The Steelers offense will need to establish the run, and if they don't a blowout will ensue -- as the Titans don't back off when the go up early.

The Steelers Josh Miller has been booming kicks averaging 45 yards a try. Troy Edwards leads the Steelers in punt returns, but hasn't broken one yet. Kicker Kris Brown is 25-29 kicking FGs this season and is also doing well kicking off for the Steelers.

Tennessee's Derrick Mason has been exciting returning punts this season, and he's brought one back for a TD. Hentrich has been kicking off with distance, but his punts are leaving lots to be desired. Del Greco is perfect on PATs and 83 percent on FGs.

Key matchups

  • Titans LDE Jevon Kearse vs. Steelers ROT Shar Pourdanesh
Pourdanesh will need to play quick against the explosive Kearse when in pass pro, however when blocking for the run he'll be instructed to let Kearse dictate his blocking technique. Kearse is so quick from the backside that Pittsburgh will run the ball at him, this will eliminate his dangerous pursuit and result in Pourdanesh inviting him upfield. Kearse is so quick to tear upfield off the ball that often he takes himself out of the play and creates running lanes for opposing backs.

  • Titans TE Frank Wycheck vs. the Steelers LBs
Wycheck is the key to the Titan Passing game because early on McNair likes to dump the ball off to him and establish a rhythm passing. Pittsburgh's LB's will need to slow Wycheck off the LOS and prevent him from getting a clean release, because if McNair is able to throw to him early it will establish the Tennessee passing game.

  • Pittsburgh DC Chad Scott vs. Titans WR Yancey Thigpen
Thigpen has been struggling gaining separation to get open of late, so Sctott will play physical as usual off of the snap. If Thigpen cannot use his hands to break free from Scott initially he' won't get a chance to use his speed.

    Tennessee will win if...

  • DC Samari Rolle can eliminate Troy Edwards. Rolle is the fastest Titan corner so he'll draw the assignment of covering Edwards. If Rolle can shut down Edwards by himself he'll prevent the Titans from having to allocate another defender to try and contain Edwards.

  • Craig Hentrich can pin the Steelers deep. The Titans are a ball control football club and have more success when they can rely on their defense and Eddie George to carry the load. If Hentrich can keep the Steeler offense backed up the Titans will be able to turn to their defense and ultimately George to win the game.

  • The Offense stays unpredictable. Though the Titans would like to rely on George to produce, this is only possible if they vary the play calling. Keeping the Steelers defense from playing in the box will help the Titans win the game.

    Pittsburgh will win if...

  • WR Malcolm Johnson can get involved in the Steeler passing game. In WR Malcolm Johnson the Steelers have a talented, improved football player, who is also a mismatch for most NFL cornerbacks because of his height, (6'5"). If Johnson can catch a pass or two he'll get so much attention he'll open things up within the Pittsburgh passing game.

  • NT Joel Steed can disrupt the Titan running game. In the Steelers 3-4 defensive scheme Steed needs to create more of a disturbance up the middle of the field. Doing so against the Titans will throw lead blockers off their paths and lead to stops in the backfield.

  • Both Bettis and Huntley can produce on the ground. In last weeks game against Carolina the Panthers couldn't come up with a way to stop either Bettis or Huntley. If both backs can again gain yardage on the ground the Steelers will keep the Tennessee defense off balance.

    The War Room edge

The Titans are running the ball as well as they ever have and are playing post-season football. Pittsburgh won't stop the Titans on the ground and, as a result, McNair won't even have to throw the ball. The Steelers will be forced into costly turnovers that could turn this contest into a blowout.
