A lot of things need to improve for the Steelers offense to start producing but all arguments always circle back to QB Kordell Stewart's inconsistency. Stewart must start doing what he does best -- be himself. With so many people -- coordinator Kevin Glibride, Bill Cowher, his receivers -- trying to get into his head, Stewart is unable to just relax and play football. He has demonstrated the ability to be a pocket passer, as well as a scrambler, but neither will work if he's thinking too much.
One thing that will go a long way in helping Stewart regain his confidence is some better play from his receiver corps. The Steelers should be able to get rookie Troy Edwards and Will Blackwell deep against the Niners' struggling secondary.
The Niners will start a different cornerback combination this week -- R.W. McQuarters and Craig Newsome -- with rookie Pierson Prioleau inheriting the nickel role. This trio gives the 49ers their most physically capable lineup of the season but the Steelers can't be afraid to test them deep. Look San Francisco to come out with a blitz-heavy scheme that will target OC Roger Duffy. Pittsburgh is getting solid play from OTs Wayne Gandy and Anthony Brown but injuries have really softened them inside. On Sunday, the onus will be on FB Jon Whitman and nickel back Richard Huntly to pickup the blitz and keep the Niners out of Stewart's throwing lanes.
RB Jerome Bettis was slowed by injuries but he has gained 191 yards the past two weeks and appears to be getting his legs back. Look for the Steelers to pound Bettis early as they hope to wear down the Niners and diminish the impact of their blitz schemes.
San Francisco has played fairly well against the run but they had trouble containing Minnesota's Leroy Hoard prior to their bye week. Defensive coordinator Jim Mora Jr. has stressed the importance of tackling the past two weeks and it will be interesting to see if his unit responds. The Niners need a big game from MLB Winfred Tubbs, whose play has dropped off after solid start. Tubbs should be able get penetration on run blitzes inside without Dermonti Dawson in the lineup.

The bye week came at a perfect time for San Francisco because it enabled the banged-up offensive line to recover. This unit should now be settling in at their respective positions after some juggling the first half of the year. This group must play their best game of the season against Pittsburgh's aggressive front seven. NT Joel Steed and DE Orpheus Roye are the unsung heroes of the defense because a lot of what they do up front frees the linebackers to make plays. The Steelers' surprisingly low sack total is not a good indication of the type of pressure Jim Haslett's defense is generating.
To his credit, Niners QB Jeff Garcia has weathered intense heat all season but he needs to start making better decisions with the football. Garcia can't afford to force the ball into coverage and give Pittsburgh's struggling offense a short field to work with. Garcia will sorely miss the services of starting TE Greg Clark, who suffered a collapsed lung against the Vikings.
The success of San Francisco's offense, especially with Garcia at the helm, is largely based on getting production from the tight end position. With neither Chad Fann nor Tony Cline as a true option, the Niners must compensate by taking advantage of J.J. Stokes' size in the underneath passing game. Stokes, who only has 15 receptions all season, is nearly as big as many tight ends in the league but he rarely uses that size to his advantage.
The Niners' biggest weapons against the blitz will be RBs Charlie Garner and Lawrence Phillips. Both players have caught the ball well out of the backfield this season but Phillips' continued struggle with blitz pickups is making it too predictable that he will get the ball when he enters the game. Coach Steve Mariucci will use dump-offs to Garner in order to slow down the pass rush and give time for Garcia to take some shots downfield.
Pittsburgh's linebacker corps will make it extremely tough on the Niners to run the football. Garner has had the majority of his success on quick-hitters up the middle but those types of plays rarely materialize against instinctive ILBs Levon Kirkland and Earl Holmes. Regardless of whether they have success on the ground early, San Francisco must stay committed to run game in order to keep the Steelers from teeing off on Garcia.

Pittsburgh rookie PK Kris Brown is holding the special teams together. Brown has nailed all 11 of his field goal attempts and his accuracy will be pivotal if the offense continues to bog down in the red-zone. Neither San Fran's R.W. McQuarters nor Pittsburgh's Will Blackwell, who each own bests of 37 yards on kickoffs, have shown the same big play ability they did a year ago. The Niners' struggling kickoff cover unit should be improved now that coach Mariucci has opted to use more veterans. Pittsburgh P Jim Miller, who is ranked fourth in the league with a 45.2 gross average, has been more consistent this season but he must concentrate on keeping the ball down in 3Com Park's swirling winds --something he's had trouble with in the past.
Key matchups
San Francisco RG Jeremy Newberry vs. Pittsburgh ILB Levon Kirkland
Kirkland is one of the biggest and most physical ILB's in the NFL, and he can be dominating as an inside blitzer. If Newberry can handle him without help, it will be a huge plus for the 49ers, but Kirkland is capable of disrupting the 49er offense.
Pittsburgh FB Jon Whitman vs. San Francisco MLB Winfred Tubbs
Whitman is an excellent lead blocker for Jerome Bettis, and he is a quiet key to the Steelers' success in the run game. Tubbs must be able to get off his blocks and get to the ball carrier, and hold his own versus the inside run.
San Francisco RB Charlie Garner vs. Pittsburgh OLBs Carlos Emmons and Jason Gildon
The 49ers are really lacking in terms of offensive threats, but Garner does have some big-play capabilities and he is a threat if he can get around the edges or catch the ball out of the backfield. The Steeler OLB's must contain him and make him run inside, which is not his strength.
Pittsburgh will win if...
Its linebacker corps can get to QB Jeff Garcia on the blitz. San Francisco's beat up line will be tested and they must hold up in order to have a chance in this one. NT Joel Steed will do his best to occupy a couple players inside while Kirkland or Holmes slips in behind.
Kordell Stewart is able to throw the ball downfield with success early in the game. Pittsburgh has not thrown the ball well vertically but they have to take their chances against the Niners' susceptible defensive backfield. It's too soon for Ramos McDonald to make an impact on Sunday.
RT Anthony Brown protects Kordell Stewarts frontside from DE Junior Bryant. Brown and Bryant are quietly having solid years and the winner of this battle will dictate whether Stewart opts to be a runner or thrower.
San Francisco will win if...
WR's Terrell Owens and Jerry Rice have a big game picking up yardage after the catch. Owens' ankle might bother him but someone needs to step up and take advantage of the Steelers' inconsistent secondary. LDC Chad Scott is a big play waiting to happen and right corner Dewayne Washington has given up his fair share as well.
They can keep the ball in front of their secondary. The Niners' secondary cannot afford to give up big plays against this struggling offense. Pittsburgh will have a difficult time scoring points if they are forced to execute a methodical game plan.
RB Charlie Garner can establish a running game against Pittsburgh's aggressive front seven. This is a tall order but it needs to get done. San Francisco will do all they can to slow down OLB's Jason Gildon and Carlos Emmons. Look for the Niners to treat short screens and dump-offs as extensions of their running game.
The War Room edge
It is hard to tell which 49er team will show up after the bye week, but even a week off cannot solve the problems that San Francisco has. They are struggling mightily in the secondary, and without QB Steve Young, they are not generating much offense. However, they are facing a Steeler offense that struggles to generate points with QB Kordell Stewart, and the Pittsburgh defense cannot carry them alone. This has the look of an ugly, mistake-filled game, but the 49ers still have enough pride and leadership and are somewhat well-rested, and should be able to sneak away with a win at home.
