Danny Cipriani has been fined £2000 after he pleaded guilty to common assault and resisting arrest following an incident at a Jersey nightclub. England and Gloucester fly-half Cipriani was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning and, after appearing at Jersey Magistrates' Court Thursday, was ordered to pay £1500 for resisting arrest, £500 for assaulting a nightclub doorman and a further £250 in compensation for bruising a female police officer. Two further charges, larceny and being disorderly on licensed premises, were dropped and the court case lasted just 13 minutes. Cipriani has seven days to pay the fine and compensation or will face 10 weeks in prison. In court, Cipriani's lawyer said the 30-year-old was "mortified" if he harmed the police officer in any way. His lawyer also apologised on behalf of Cipriani for his actions, accepting he had let himself, his family and his club down. The fly-half, who recently returned to Eddie Jones' England squad and made his first Test start for 10 years against South Africa in June, was in Jersey taking part in Gloucester's pre-season training tour. Cipriani joined Gloucester from Wasps following the 2017-18 Premiership season. In a statement, Gloucester Rugby CEO Stephen Vaughan said the club was "very disappointed" with their new signing's actions but will be standing by their man. "Danny is very remorseful after the incident and would like to thank those who supported him during this time. He fully accepts the outcome and his punishment from the judicial system this morning," the club said. "Incidents of this nature are very disappointing to be associated with, and we will deal with it in a robust but balanced way but based purely on the facts," Vaughan added. "He knows his responsibilities and is aware of the impact of this type of incident on the club. However, Danny is a Gloucester Rugby player and will receive our full support as we focus on the exciting season ahead."
