Wallaroos captain Liz Patu cited for biting

Rugby

Australian women's rugby captain Liz Patu is facing accusations of biting an opponent during a Super W match and will learn her fate at a disciplinary hearing on Monday evening.

Patu could miss the rest of the competition after allegedly biting Wallaroos teammate Rebecca Clough on the arm in the 70th minute of Saturday's second-round match between Queensland and Rugby WA in Brisbane.

Rugby WA lock Clough complained to referee Lara West, pointing to what she said was a bite mark.

West didn't have television footage available to verify the cause of the mark but Rugby Australia officials saw enough to schedule the hearing in Brisbane.

Patu could become the first Super W to be handed a sanction since the competition's inception last year.

It could be a sizeable one too, with the punishment for biting starting at a minimum 12 weeks, although that can be reduced.

Former Wallabies winger Drew Mitchell was scathing of 29-year-old prop Patu, saying the evidence against her was "pretty damning".

"That's disgusting and not part of our game, especially from an Australian representative and a captain at that," he said in commentary.

Patu was named skipper of the Wallaroos last year, leading them to twin losses against her native New Zealand.
