Brumbies coach Dan McKellar re-signs through 2022

Rugby, Super Rugby

Brumbies coach Dan McKellar has recommitted to the franchise for another season, giving the club a huge boost ahead of Super Rugby AU.

The Brumbies announced the one-year extension, just eight days out from their tournament opener, against the Force in Perth, ending speculation that McKellar could soon shift to the Wallabies.

McKellar has been earmarked as Dave Rennie's logical Wallabies successor, and was tipped to move to the national team's staff after this Super Rugby season, but he will instead remain in Canberra through 2022.

"I couldn't be happier to be extending my time here at the Brumbies, it's a great club and Canberra is certainly home for me and my family," McKellar said via a media release.

"We achieved some success here last year but as a group we know we have plenty to improve on and our goal is to make the program here at the Brumbies the best in the world.

"We have excellent staff here across the board and to know I'll be working alongside Laurie and Rod for the next two seasons is great for the program.

"I'd like to thank Phil Thomson and the board for their endorsement and support and can't wait for the season to kick off next week."

The Brumbies head into Super Rugby AU as defending champions and they will again take some beating given the strength of their squad.

Brumbies chief executive Phil Thomson said McKellar had done a great job building the Brumbies program since first taking charge three years ago.

"We're delighted Dan will be staying with us here at the Plus500 Brumbies until at least the end of next year."

"He's fast becoming one of the brightest young professional coaches in the game and it's been pleasing to see how he has built the program since taking over in 2018.

"To have Laurie [Fisher] and Rod [Seib] alongside him for the next two seasons is great for the continuity of the team and we're looking forward to seeing them take to the field next Friday night."

McKellar could still conceivably jump over to Rennie's Wallabies staff following the conclusion of next year's Super Rugby commitments, giving him a little more than 12 months exposure, and a World Cup experience, before potentially taking on the head coaching role himself.
