ISSF World Cup: Bhaker-Chaudhary, Moudgil-Panwar win mixed team golds

Shooting, Olympic Sports

India's Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker won gold in the 10m air pistol mixed team event at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany on Thursday. Adding to the tally, Anjum Moudgil and Divyansh Singh Panwar also won gold in the 10m air rifle mixed team event while compatriots Apurvi Chandela and and Deepak Kumar won the silver medal, thereby completing a formidable 1-2 in the event on the final day of the tournament.

India, therefore, finished atop of the medal standings with six medals, including five golds -- the highest in this World Cup -- and one silver.

With this win, Bhaker and Chaudhary have now won four mixed team golds in the 10m air pistol event in as many months. The duo had earlier won the top prize at the Beijing World Cup last month, the Asian Airgun Championship in Taipei in March and at the New Delhi World Cup in February. They finished on top of the table with a score of 551 points in the qualification round to make it to the gold medal match.

Moudgil and Panwar, too, now have won two gold medals in the 10m air rifle mixed event at back-to-back World Cups - the previous one coming at the Beijing World Cup in April. They shot a combined 631.9 while Chandela and Kumar shot 630.2, finishing first and second respectively, to qualify for the gold medal match.

In the final of both events, thereafter, the final four shooters take one shot each in the duration of 50 seconds in each series, after which the higher-scoring team earns two points. The team that scores 16 points first wins - a feat that Bhaker and Chaudhary attained in 13 series while Moudgil and Panwar achieved it in just nine series.

Bhaker-Chaudhary, Moudgil-Panwar and Chandela-Kumar's performance, however, did not earn them a Tokyo Olympics quota place, as all events other than the mixed air rifle and pistol disciplines are the ones with Olympic quota places on offer.

Individually, however, Bhaker, Chaudhary, Moudgil, Chandela and Panwar have already secured berths in their respective events. In September 2018, Chandela and Moudgil became the first Indian shooters to win quotas for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after they finished fourth and second respectively in the 10m air rifle event at the World Championships. Chaudhary booked a Tokyo 2020 berth for India by shooting a world record score of 245 - which he bettered in Munich on Monday - during his maiden World Cup outing in New Delhi in February. 17-year-old Panwar earned a quota place at the Beijing World Cup last month while Bhaker clinched one in Munich on Wednesday.
