FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Oscar Pareja scored in the 70th minute
Friday night to give the Dallas Burn a 1-0 victory over the New
England Revolution.
The Revolution have won only twice since the All-Star break and
remain one point behind Miami for the final Eastern Conference
playoff berth. Dallas has already clinched a playoff berth.
The Revolution (11-20) had the better of the chances, but Dallas
(17-13) made the most of its scant opportunities, aided by some
shoddy defending by New England.
Pareja got his fourth goal of the year after Mark Santel's cross
from the left corner was headed to him by Jason Kreis, who was left
unmarked by John Harkes. Pareja slotted the ball home from 10
yards.
Dallas goalkeeper Matt Jordan had consecutive stops of a header
by Giovanni Savarese and a spinning kick by Johnny Torres in the
final minute.
New England had two chances in the early going. In the ninth
minute, Joe-Max Moore took a cross by Ted Chronopoulos and struck a
powerful shot from 5 yards only to be denied by Jordan. Three
minutes later, Harkes floated a cross to Savarese, who headed wide
of the left post. At 16 minutes, Harkes put Moore into the Dallas
area, where he was again foiled by Jordan _ this time from 6 yards.
Eight minutes into the second half, Ariel Graziani put Pareja
through on the right side where he knocked a high shot from 15
yards that goalkeeper Jeff Causey palmed away. The rebound came to
Santel 17 yards out on the left side, but the Dallas midfielder
shot right at Causey.
