WASHINGTON (AP) -- Ted Chronopoulos' goal snapped a 2-2 tie in the shootout and gave the New England Revolution a 2-1 victory over D.C. United in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday night. Despite the victory, New England (12-20) missed the playoffs. In addition to a victory over United, the Revolution needed Miami to lose to Colorado on Saturday, but the Fusion won 2-0. By contrast, United (23-9) opens the MLS Eastern Conference semifinals next Saturday in a best-of-3 series against Miami, which squeaked into the fourth and final playoff spot. United beat Miami 3-1 in each of their three matches this season. After Chronopoulos scored in the sixth round of the shootout, United's Geoff Aunger missed, ending the game. Johnny Torres and Mike Burns also scored for New England, while United's Marco Etchevarry and Jeff Agoos converted. United will be seeking its third MLS championship, having won the title in the league's inaugural 1996 season and again in 1997. D.C. lost the championship game to the Chicago Fire last October. It took only until the second minute for United to lead. Etcheverry's corner kick curved a few feet in front of the goal and off the leg of Chronopoulos for an own goal. The Revolution tied the game in the 50th minute when Leonel Alvarez passed to John Harkes at the right of the penalty box. Harkes made a perfect centering pass to Joe-Max Moore, who blasted a shot into the net from about 19 yards out.
