FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Imad Baba scored two goals, including an overtime strike, as the New England Revolution beat D.C. United 2-1 on Saturday night for their first victory of the year.
On the winning goal, Baba took a short pass from William Sunsing and cracked a 6-yard shot off the left post, cleanly beating goalkeeper Tom Prestus.
"I just wanted to get it on goal," Baba said. "I made a late
run and yelled for it -- I'm not sure he even saw me, but he laid it
off beautifully. I never saw the ball go in. I just saw it hit the
post."
New England improved to 1-2-2, while D.C. United fell to 1-3.
D.C. United opened the scoring when midfielder Eddie Pope found
Jamie Moreno with a long pass through the New England defense.
Moreno ran uncontested into the Revolution area and put the ball
inside the right post from 12 yards out in the 19th minute.
It was Moreno's third goal of the year.
The Revolution missed several chances to tie until D.C. defender
Jeff Agoos took down Sunsing in the 72nd minute. The ensuing
penalty was slammed home to the left side by Baba.
Neither team could produce a winning goal in the first
five-minute overtime period, but Baba put the game away early in
the next period.
