LONDON -- The draw for the 2002 Davis Cup was postponed two weeks until Oct. 18 because of the delay of the series between the United States and India. The World Group qualifier had been scheduled for this weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C., but was switched to Oct. 12-14 because of the terrorist attacks. The draw will be held in Zurich, Switzerland. In this weekend's other Davis Cup matches, Australia will play at Sweden in one semifinal at Sydney, and France will play at the Netherlands in Rotterdam in the other semi. The other World Group qualifying games are: Argentina-Belarus, Belgium-Morocco, Czech Republic-Romania, Ecuador-Britain, Italy-Croatia, Slovakia-Chile and Spain-Uzbekistan. "Davis Cup is a competition whose aim is to foster understanding among nations through tennis and we feel that we are making a contribution to that goal by continuing to play as normal," Francesco Ricci Bitti, president of the International Tennis Federation, said Wednesday. "I think our Davis Cup players will feel a little extra incentive to represent their countries proudly this weekend." |
