In women's play, Russian teenager Elena Bovina beat fifth-seeded countrywoman Anastasia Myskina 6-3, 7-5, and eighth-seeded Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria edged Italy's Silvia Farina Elia 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Former Australian and French Open champion Mary Pierce pulled out of the tournament with a stomach strain.
