Top seed Safin pulls out of Sydney tournament

Associated Press

SYDNEY, Australia -- Top-seeded Marat Safin withdrew from the adidas International on Thursday because of a shoulder injury.

Safin, ranked No. 3 and a finalist at the last Australian Open, had an inflamed rotator cuff in his right shoulder. The 22-year-old Russian had played on the previous two days in Sydney and was due to face South Korea's Lee Hyung-taik later Thursday in a quarterfinal.

"I can play a forehand and a backhand, I just can't serve at full power -- it doesn't make any sense to suffer on the court," Safin said.

Safin said he would fly to Melbourne later Thursday to prepare for the Australian Open starting Monday.

"Hopefully, I'll be ready for the Australian Open ... I've asked for a late start and I'll try to recover," he said.

Lee has a semifinal match Friday with Wayne Ferreira, who beat qualifier Franco Squillari 6-0, 6-4.

In other men's quarterfinals, second-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero ended Paradorn Srichaphan's winning run with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Paradorn won the Indian Open at Madras last Sunday.

Ferrero faces a semifinal against Rainer Schuettler, who overcame Mardy Fish 7-6 (5), 6-0. Fish had a late finish Wednesday, when he ousted third-seeded Carlos Moya in a rain-delayed night match.

In the women's draw, sixth-seeded Lindsay Davenport toppled fourth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3), missing a match point at 6-5 in the third and rallying from 3-1 down in the tiebreaker.

Davenport, the 1999 champion, has a semifinal match with Russia's Tatiana Panova, who beat Belarus' Olga Barabanschikova 6-3, 6-2.

Second-seeded Kim Clijsters dumped seventh-seeded Chanda Rubin 6-1, 6-2 in just 46 minutes, and set up a clash with Belgian compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne, who defeated Amanda Coetzer 6-4, 6-4.
