TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. -- Former tennis star Roscoe Tanner was extradited from Germany on charges of writing a bad check worth $35,000 and failing to pay child support.

Tanner was being held in the Pinellas County Jail without bail Tuesday, one day after being extradited.

Tanner bounced a check for $35,595 to buy a 32-foot boat three years ago while working as a tennis instructor at the Treasure Island Tennis and Yacht Club, the Pinellas County State Attorney's Office said.

He used the boat's title as collateral for a $10,000 loan, and bounced a check to the lending company when he started repayments, court documents said.

Tanner is being represented by the Pinellas County Public Defender's Office, which did not immediately return calls seeking comment Tuesday.

Tanner is also wanted in New Jersey, where he is accused of failing to pay more than $70,000 in child support since November, said Capt. Ken Bird of the Somerset County Sheriff's Office.

Tanner has had an ongoing legal battle with a New Jersey woman who said he fathered her child.

The 51-year-old Tanner, known as one of the hardest servers in tennis, won the Australian Open in 1977 and was a Wimbledon finalist in 1979. Ranked among the top-10 players during the 1970s and '80s, Tanner won 11 career singles titles.
