Sun's Clarendon out for 3-4 months after surgery

Connecticut Sun guard Layshia Clarendon had surgery on her right ankle Tuesday and has an expected recovery time of three to four months. That timetable means the 28-year-old is unlikely to play again this season, unless the Sun make a deep playoff run.

Connecticut currently leads the league at 9-2.

The surgery repaired the peroneal retinaculum and stabilized the dislocated peroneal tendons in Clarendon's ankle, which she injured in practice after stepping on someone's foot.

"As much as I hoped, wished and asked if there was a way to just like use some tape or brace to be able to play, it just wasn't possible," Clarendon wrote on Twitter. "Just like that, I probably won't play again this season. I worked so hard this offseason and am in the best shape ever, so this hurts even more."

Clarendon averaged 6.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists this season for the Sun. She is in her seventh season in the WNBA after being drafted No. 9 out of Cal in 2013 by the Indiana Fever. She has previously played for the Fever and the Atlanta Dream.
