Sara Anastasieska transfers to Duke from California

Women's College Basketball, Duke Blue Devils, California Golden Bears

New Duke women's basketball coach Kara Lawson will have additional experience to work with this season after adding former Cal starter Sara Anastasieska to the roster as a transfer.

The school announced Anastasieska's addition Thursday.

A 5-foot-11 guard originally from Australia, Anastasieska will be eligible immediately as a sixth-year graduate transfer. She started 25 games for Cal last season, averaging 7.8 points and 1.8 assists. She also hit 27 3-pointers, more than all but one returnee on the Duke roster she now joins.

Anastasieska is the first player to officially join Duke since Lawson was hired earlier this month, although the Australian committed to transfer before former coach Joanne P. McCallie stepped down on July 2.

Anastasieska played her freshman season at Texas-San Antonio before she transferred to Cal. She sat out the 2016-17 season as a transfer and then played just 10 games over the next two seasons due to injuries before emerging as a starter last season.
