Louisville Cardinals women's basketball postpones game vs. North Carolina Tar Heels

The second-ranked Louisville women's basketball team has postponed Sunday's game against North Carolina and paused all team activities because of a positive COVID-19 test within the program, the school announced Friday.

The Cardinals are 5-0 this season and moved up three spots in Monday's AP Top 25. Louisville opened its ACC season Wednesday with a 73-49 rout of Duke.

The positive test and accompanying contact tracing are within a group of individuals in the program that the Cardinals refer to as "Tier 1" -- student-athletes, coaches, team managers and staff. Louisville conducts COVID-19 testing three times per week, per ACC protocols, and the positive test came back Friday.

"We are obviously disappointed, but unfortunately this is all part of the 2020-21 season," said Louisville coach Jeff Walz, who has at times this season turned to Twitter to seek replacement opponents for games that were canceled because of coronavirus concerns.

Louisville's next game is scheduled for Thursday at home versus Florida State, but the school did not address how Friday's pause would affect games past Sunday.

Louisville is the second top-five women's college basketball program to pause this season amid coronavirus concerns. No. 3 UConn, which had its game against Louisville in the Jimmy V Women's Classic on Dec. 4 canceled because of its own 14-day pause, makes its season debut Saturday against UMass Lowell.
