Purdue women's basketball coach Sharon Versyp is under investigation for creating a "toxic and hostile environment," according to a report in the Lafayette Journal & Courier.
The newspaper cited a document from the university's Office of Institutional Equity, which oversees the investigation into whether Versyp has been in violation of the school's anti-harassment policy. No date for the completion of the investigation has been made available. Contacted by ESPN.com, university spokesman Tim Doty had no comment.
Allegations cited go from the 2018-19 season to this past season. Both Versyp and Terry Kix, the director of women's basketball operations, are named in the report, according to the Journal & Courier. The examples given include referring to players as "selfish and not for the team" while keeping them out of the locker room after a game, and telling a player in front of her teammates that she was an "[expletive] pathetic leader."
Versyp, who played at Purdue, is headed into her 16th and final season as head coach at her alma mater, where she has gone 301-194 and advanced to the NCAA tournament nine times with four Big Ten tournament titles. Purdue was 7-16 overall and 4-14 in Big Ten play last season.
Former Boilermaker player Katie Gearlds is Purdue's associate head coach this season and is set to take over the program after its conclusion. Purdue put the coaching succession plan in place by hiring Gearlds in March. The document the Journal & Courier obtained about the investigation into Versyp was dated May 20.
