Aneesah Morrow's double-double streak ends as DePaul falls in Big East quarterfinals

Women's College Basketball, DePaul Blue Demons

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Freshman Aneesah Morrow's streak of 23 consecutive double-doubles came to an end Saturday in DePaul's 105-85 loss to Marquette in the Big East quarterfinals.

Morrow finished with a game-high 29 points on 10-20 shooting but collected just six rebounds as the Blue Demons were ultimately outrebounded 49-17 by the Golden Eagles.

"The score was really 49-17," DePaul coach Doug Bruno said. "I think that in a nutshell was the basketball game tonight."

"I would just say Marquette's determination to get me off the boards was one of the biggest things," Morrow added. "Sometimes they were sending three and four people to box me out or just go for the ball. So that was a big thing today."

Marquette shot 66% from the field, not giving DePaul too many opportunities to get defensive boards. Morrow's double-double streak was the sixth longest in a season in Division I women's college basketball history.

South Carolina's Aliyah Boston now owns the longest active streak with 23 straight double-doubles following South Carolina's win over Ole Miss later Saturday.

Morrow and Boston are two of five players ever to record more than 20 consecutive double-doubles in a season.

Morrow, a 6-1 forward, was unanimously tabbed Big East Freshman of the Year earlier this week while also earning a spot on the All-Big East First Team and the All-Big East Freshman Team.

Despite subdued fanfare around her recruitment, the Chicago product burst onto the national scene this year, averaging 21.7 points and 13.8 rebounds per game for the Blue Demons. She collected 26 double-doubles in 32 contests.

Morrow's season-high 41 points last week against Creighton were one shy of matching DePaul's single-game scoring record. She was also one of three players this season with at least four 30-point, 10-rebound games, joining Big East player of the year Maddy Siegrist and Kansas State's Ayoka Lee, who each had six.

Morrow is one of 15 players and the only freshman named a finalist for the Wooden Award, given to the country's top player. She is also the sole freshman named a semifinalist for Naismith college defensive player of the year.

DePaul's prospects of making the NCAA Tournament don't look great after Saturday, as ESPN bracketologist Charlie Creme had them in the "first four out" group prior to the loss. Before the 2020-21 season, DePaul was just one of five programs to make at least 17 straight NCAA Tournaments.

"Just to continue to grow," Morrow said of where she wants to go from here. "This is not the way I imagined ending my season, in the Big East Tournament. But just to continue to grow every day. The next day is time to get better, so we can't dwell on the moment."
