Maryland signs women's basketball coach Brenda Frese to contract extension through 2028-29 season

Maryland announced Tuesday that longtime women's basketball head coach Brenda Frese has received a contract extension through the 2028-29 season.

Frese, the winningest coach in program history, just completed her 20th season at the helm in College Park, where she's led the Terps to 10 Sweet 16s, six Elite Eights, three Final Fours and the 2006 national title. She also boasts the best career winning percentage (.777) of all Big Ten men's and women's basketball head coaches.

Under Frese, Maryland has won 14 conference championships, including six of eight Big Ten titles since joining the league in 2014.

Frese boasts a 535-140 record at Maryland and 592-170 record overall, after also serving as head coach at Ball State and Minnesota for a combined three seasons. Fourteen of her former players have been drafted into the WNBA.

The Terps (23-9) struggled with injuries and inconsistency in 2021-22 before falling in the Sweet 16 to eventual Final Four squad Stanford. They've experienced some roster change in the offseason with the graduation or transfer of five regular contributors from last season, as well as the addition of four new players over the last few weeks: two freshmen and two transfers, Elisa Pinzan from South Florida and Abby Meyers from Princeton.
