Maryland's Ashley Owusu says she's transferring to Virginia Tech

Guard Ashley Owusu, who was Big Ten women's basketball freshman of the year in 2020 while at Maryland, announced on social media Saturday that she is transferring to Virginia Tech.

Owusu was No. 2 on ESPN writer Charlie Creme's recent ranking of top transfers in women's basketball who had yet to commit. She was ranked the No. 5 recruit by ESPN HoopGurlz in the class of 2019.

Owusu averaged 14.3 points and 3.7 assists as a junior this past season for Maryland, which advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA women's basketball tournament. In 2021, she won the Ann Meyers Drysdale award for top shooting guard.

Owusu, who is from Woodbridge, Virginia, joins a Hokies team that went 23-10 and fell in the first round of the NCAA tournament this past season.
