Shaylee Gonzales, the women's basketball player of the year in the West Coast Conference for BYU, has entered the transfer portal.
Gonzales helped the Cougars to a 26-4 record this past season as the school fell to Villanova in the NCAA tournament's first round. The 5-foot-10 guard from Gilbert, Arizona, averaged 18.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.5 assists.
Gonzales was the WCC co-player of the year for 2020-21, when she averaged 17.8 points per game. In her freshman season, 2018-19, Gonzales averaged 17.0 points. She sat out the 2019-20 season with a knee injury.
Gonzales is expected to be sought after by several top programs. Because of the blanket eligibility waiver for 2020-21, she has two seasons of eligibility left.
Typically, student-athletes from fall and winter sports have until May 1 to enter the transfer portal and still be eligible for the next season. However, there can be an exception because of a head coach change made after May 1. Longtime BYU coach Jeff Judkins stepped down in April, but he wasn't replaced until May 18 by Amber Whiting, a former BYU player.
