Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay hurt his back Sunday night while trying to break up a fight after a women's basketball game. A West Virginia staff member and a fan were shouting at each other in the final seconds of the Mountaineers' 59-56 win against Hawaii, according to Honolulu TV station KHON. Fans told the station that the fan had been heckling the West Virginia bench. The brawl spilled from the stands onto the court, and Jay suffered a back spasm as he tried to pull people off of a pile. Police told KHON no arrests were made and no serious injuries were reported. "We apologize to our fans and our visitors from West Virginia for the unfortunate incident that occurred following our women's basketball game last night," Jay said Monday in a statement. "We're pleased that no one was seriously injured and we appreciate those who assisted with keeping it from escalating further. We will speak to the parties involved and take the appropriate action to address this particular situation and help avoid future incidents."
