MESA, Ariz. (AP) _ Another game, another injured Cub.

Glenallen Hill scored one of Chicago's three runs in the eighth inning of Sunday's 8-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies, but he also pulled his left hamstring as he rounded third base. Doctors will check him again Monday.

``I've seen better days,'' Hill said.

So have a lot of other Cubs. It's that time in spring training, when nagging injuries show up and players go down. But with the season opener in Japan against the New York Mets only 10 days away, the situation is getting more dire with every day and every injury.

At least Sammy Sosa wasn't hurt when he slid into home plate in the sixth inning. Sosa scored on Henry Rodriguez's two-run double, beating the throw from left.

His right knee was slightly swollen after the game and he had a few cuts, but he said he's fine.

``It was a great play,'' manager Don Baylor said. ``It really picked our guys up.''

Team doctors looked at eight players Sunday afternoon, checking everything from Kerry Wood's reconstructed elbow to Ismael Valdes' sore shoulder. Some of the news was good _ Wood came through his first start in more than a year Saturday perfectly _ and some of it was not so good.

The worst off is Willie Greene. The third baseman will be out two to three weeks after splitting the area between his right thumb and forefinger while trying to field a ground ball. He needed nine stitches.

``There's a danger if he gets out there too soon the stitches will break and we'll have to start all over again,'' general manager Ed Lynch said. ``So we're going to be conservative.''

There's no timetable for Valdes, either. Valdes, penciled in as the starter for the opener in Japan, is taking anti-inflammatories to relieve tightness in his right shoulder. The Cubs will check him again in a few days, but manager Don Baylor is already tweaking the rotation in his mind.

``We do have a backup plan for that,'' Baylor said.

But there are plenty of other holes to fill. Not only is Greene out, but utility infielder Jose Nieves is nursing a strained groin. That leaves Shane Andrews alone at third.

Greene is also one of the few left-handed batters in the lineup, and Baylor hasn't found anyone to fill that spot.

``We might have to end up just taking the guys who have real good springs,'' he said. ``If they're right-handed, they're right-handed.''

Wood will likely start the season on the disabled list, but there's no clear choice for the fifth spot in the rotation. The bullpen is shaky, too, and Baylor is still looking for a setup man.

``We do have some needs to fill,'' Lynch said. ``We'll certainly talk with as many teams as we can and see if we can fill any of these holes.''

But most teams are looking for the same things the Cubs are: relievers, utility infielders and backup outfielders.

``I'm going to try my hardest to address it,'' Lynch said. ``Can I realistically predict that I'm definitely going to be able to fill it? No, I can't. But I'm certainly going to try.''

Notes: Rockies 1B Todd Helton came into the game without any homers in spring training. By the end of the seventh inning, he had two. Helton led off the fifth and seventh innings with homers. ... Starting pitcher Kevin Tapani got the Cubs' first hit of the game, a huge double in the third inning. ... Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson was in the Cubs clubhouse after the game.
