BOX SCORE
YUMA, Arizona (Ticker) -- Ruben Rivera went 3-for-4 with an RBI and rookie Sean Burroughs drove in two runs as the San Diego Padres held on for an 8-7 Cactus League victory over the Seattle Mariners. San Diego scored a run in the third inning and increased its lead to 3-0 in the fourth, highlighted by Burroughs' first of two doubles. Burroughs also drove in a run in the fifth as the Padres built a 5-0 lead. The Mariners almost tied the game in the ninth. After John Mabry's two-run homer cut the deficit to 8-7, Seattle put runners on first and second but rookie Dusty Wathan, who had already driven in three runs, ended the game with a groudout. Seattle starter Brett Tomko, who came over from Cincinnati in the Ken Griffey Jr. trade, allowed a run on five hits through three innings. Tom Davey was hit the hardest out of the six Seattle relievers, surrendering two runs in the second and three more in the third. Padres starter Stan Spencer allowed only one hit through three innings while striking out three to notch the win.
