BOX SCORE
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ Ruben Rivera was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and John Roskos, bidding for a roster spot, hit his fourth spring home run as the San Diego Padres beat the Chicago Cubs 6-4 Tuesday. Rivera hit a two-out double against Todd Van Poppel in the fourth inning and scored on a single by Ben Davis. In the sixth, Rivera singled against Andrew Lorraine and later scored on a single by Carlos Hernandez. Rivera capped his day with an RBI double in the eighth, driving in Ralph Milliard with Lorraine still pitching. The game was tied at 4 when Roskos led off the eighth with a solo home run off Lorraine (0-1). Roskos, a catcher-first baseman who's in camp on a non-roster basis, is 14-for-22 (.636) with five doubles and four home runs. Padres starter Woody Williams pitched five scoreless innings before tiring in the sixth and allowing four runs. He gave up eight hits and a walk while striking out seven. His outing was the longest by a Padres pitcher this spring. Buddy Carlyle (2-0), who has had elbow problems this spring, looked strong in a two-inning relief appearance. He allowed only a single by Chris Hatcher while facing seven batters. Van Poppel went four innings and allowed two runs on six hits and a walk. Damon Buford and Cole Liniak each went 2-for-4. Sammy Sosa didn't play because of a minor knee injury. The Cubs have only two exhibition games left in Arizona. They leave Friday for Japan, where they'll play exhibition games against the Yomiuri Giants and the Seibu Lions before opening the regular season with two games against the New York Mets.
