Kennedy drives in half of Angels' 16

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

TORONTO (AP) -- Rookie Adam Kennedy couldn't believe the luck his teammates gave him.

Kennedy tied a team record with eight RBI, hitting a grand slam and barely missing another in leading the Anaheim Angels over the Toronto Blue Jays 16-10 Tuesday night.

"Who comes to up to the plate three times with the bases loaded?," Kennedy said. "That just doesn't happen."

Kennedy went 4-for-5 with a home run, a bases-loaded triple and two singles. He matched the Angels' mark for RBI, accomplished four times, most recently by Don Baylor on Aug. 25, 1979, at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto.

"If I can have the career that he had, than that would be great," Kennedy said.

Given a chance at hitting for the cycle, Kennedy walked in the seventh and had an RBI single in the ninth.

Kennedy almost a second at bat in the ninth -- and a fourth chance with the bases loaded -- but Orlando Palmeiro popped out with Kennedy on deck.

A wild ninth inning saw the Angels score five runs, Toronto score six times, a bench-clearing brawl and a separate ejection.

Shortly after Kennedy's RBI single, Blue Jays reliever John Frascatore hit Scott Spiezio with a pitch. There were no punches thrown and Frascatore was ejected.

"Everybody should take their beatings like a man and respond accordingly," Anaheim's Mo Vaughn said. "That's not how to do it. If you can't get guys out, then find somewhere else to pitch."

Jose Cruz Jr. hit a three-run homer in the Blue Jays ninth. Later, Raul Mondesi was ejected.

After two close strike calls, Mondesi flied out and was tossed by plate umpire Al Clark on the way back to the dugout. Mondesi threw a water cooler from the bench.

Kennedy hit a grand slam off Frank Castillo in the fourth. The 24-year-old second baseman almost did it again in the fifth, tripling off the center-field wall.

"I was hoping it would go, but at least I got those runs in," Kennedy said.

Anaheim starter Jason Dickson (2-0) took a shutout into the sixth before the Blue Jays hit three consecutive home runs. Craig Grebeck hit a two-run shot and Mondesi and Carlos Delgado followed with their fourth homers of the season.

Castillo (0-2) gave up five runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.

"We didn't forget how to pitch in three weeks," Delgado said. "We've just got to come back tomorrow."

Anaheim took a 5-0 lead in the fourth on Kennedy's first career slam. After Bengie Molina hit an RBI single in the fifth, reliever John Bale loaded the bases before Kennedy tripled to give the Angels a 9-0 lead.

Troy Glaus' homer in the sixth made it 11-0.
