MIAMI (AP) -- Once Brad Penny could see straight, he didn't have any problems dealing with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Penny settled down after needing a five-minute break in the second inning, allowing two runs in 6 1/3 innings as the Florida Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 Sunday.

"Everything got blurry and I couldn't see anything," Penny said. "I took a few deep breaths, but the whole game I felt bad."

Penny (3-1), a rookie right-hander, called for the trainer after retiring Scott Rolen to lead off the second inning. He complained that he was lightheaded and was "seeing spots."

Marlins manager John Boles said that Penny gets wired and jittery from caffeine and that he had a bad reaction from two aspirins that the took before the game. Once he got to the dugout, the trainer took Penny's blood pressure and gave him cheese and Gatorade to calm him down.

"He said he couldn't see the batter and I told him, 'You're better off not seeing him (Rolen),' " Boles said. "He's going to get better and better ... You're talking about a guy who is going to be on some All-Star teams."

After about five minutes, Penny threw some warm-up pitches and retired Rico Brogna and Mike Lieberthal to get out of the inning. Penny allowed only a soft single to pitcher Robert Person in the first five innings and just five hits overall.

"He has a tremendous arm," Phillies manager Terry Francona said. "I saw him pitch in the fall leauge and he threw even better today. No wonder, they're high on him."

Brant Brown hit a solo homer and Mike Lowell had a two-run shot as the Marlins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Person (1-1).

"That shows the character of not only our team but the kid (Penny)," Brown said. "He's seeing the Little Dipper and the Big Dipper and he's still throwing strikes."

Person allowed four runs -- three earned -- and four hits in six innings. He gave up just two singles after the first inning.

After the Marlins made it 4-0 with an unearned run in the sixth, the Phillies bounced back with two-run seventh.

Bobby Abreu singled, stole second and scored on Rolen's single. Rolen then scored on Brogna's double.

The Marlins added another run in the seventh when Mark Kotsay's grounder in the hole was inadvertently kicked by second baseman Kevin Jordan into foul territory and went for an RBI double.

Antonio Alfonseca pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

Injuries to Luis Castillo and Dave Berg sped up the major league debut of Pablo Ozuna, whom the Marlins acquired in December 1998 from the Cardinals. Ozuna went 1-for-4. ... Florida LF Cliff Floyd missed his second consecutive game with a nagging groin pull. He hasn't started in seven of the first 20 games. ... The Marlins extended their best start ever to 12-8. ... Brogna was back in the starting lineup after missing his first start of the season Saturday after being hit in the knee with a pitch Friday.
