Even Williams' 7 RBI can't derail White Sox

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

NEW YORK (AP) -- Bernie Williams had a great day. The Chicago White Sox had a better one.

Bernie Williams
Bernie Williams got two of his RBI with this eighth-inning home run.

Williams drove in seven runs with a homer and two doubles -- all two-out hits -- but the White Sox won their 10th straight road game, 10-9 over the New York Yankees on Saturday.

Magglio Ordonez homered and drove in four runs as the White Sox won their sixth in a row -- three at Cleveland and three at Yankee Stadium. Chicago has the longest road winning streak in the majors this season, and its longest since taking 11 straight in 1990. "Again, it's really early in the season," Chicago manger Jerry Manuel said of his team's 7½-game lead in the AL Central. "But it is good to be in this position.

"This team is so young that they hang together on the road. It is almost like a minor league team because they don't have homes or families yet. So when they're on the road they have a lot of camaraderie."

Williams hit a two-run homer, a three-run double and a two-run double. His 13th homer came in the eighth and made it 10-9.

"I felt pretty good out there, having some good swings," Williams said. "We were down early in the game, we came back after the rain delay. We seem to have some momentum, but came up too short. It's disappointing from a team standpoint, but don't get me wrong, I'll take a day like this anyday. I'm hitting key situations with two outs and men in scoring position."

Jake Westbrook (0-1) was in trouble from the start in his major league debut. He walked leadoff man Ray Durham and went on to allow six runs and seven hits, including Ordonez's 14th homer, in just 1 2/3 innings.

"The leadoff walk to start the game set the tone," the right-hander said. "I've got to concentrate on getting the ball down. I definitely have to put it behind me and move on, because they're throwing me out there again next Thursday."

Said manager Joe Torre: "I'm sure he was nervous. He wasn't the same pitcher he was in the bullpen. It's not a surprise if he's pitching in front of 50,000. He'll get another start."

Although it didn't have an effect on the score, Yankees second baseman Chuck Knoblauch's throwing woes continued.

After fielding a slow grounder by Greg Norton that was ruled an infield single in the fourth, Knoblauch made a throw that sailed over first baseman Tino Martinez and hit a woman in the stands. Knoblauch immediately turned away in disgust as the ball left his hand.

The woman, who appeared to be hit in the body, was OK. She initially declined help, then walked with two Emergency Medical Service workers through the stands to the first-aid station. She later returned to her seat.

"It shouldn't surprise people that he throws one away," Torre said. "He's got a much better attitude. He's working on it."

Knoblauch was not available after the game.

Cal Eldred (8-2) survived a 57-minute rain delay to pitch five innings.

"It was a long game. The delay was about an hour, it seemed like three," Eldred said. "There really wasn't any doubt that I was going back out."

Keith Foulke got the final four outs for his 16th save. Ricky Ledee doubled with two outs in the ninth, but Scott Brosius grounded out.

Chris Singleton hit a solo homer off Jason Grimsley in the Chicago fourth.

The White Sox, with the best record in baseball, will try Sunday for their first four-game sweep at Yankee Stadium since 1990.
