GAME LOG
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- When Fernando Vina and J.D. Drew reach base,
they like their chances of scoring.
Drew had a career-high four hits and Vina had three Sunday as
the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4.

"We have a very good lineup behind me," Vina said, the
Cardinals' leadoff man. "I'm always excited to get on base. I need
to get on to make things go. It worked out good today. Being behind
4-1, to come back and win it, that was big."
A 13-hit attack took care of the Brewers, much to the delight of
manager Tony La Russa.
"It was a good time to re-emerge," he said.
Pat Hentgen (11-9) survived a shaky start -- falling behind 4-1
after three innings -- but got the win. He allowed four runs, seven
hits and four walks in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out seven.
The Cardinals took the lead with four runs in the fifth off
Jamey Wright (6-6). They loaded the bases on a single by Vina, a
bunt single by Drew and a walk to Jim Edmonds.
Will Clark hit a sacrifice fly before Ray Lankford walked to
reload the bases. Edgar Renteria hit another sacrifice fly, and
Mike Matheny and Placido Polanco added RBI singles to give St.
Louis a 5-4 lead.
"Today it was all about the offense," Hentgen said. "We were
patient, took some walks and it led to a big inning."
The Cardinals added another run in the sixth when Vina led off
with a double off Valerio De Los Santos and scored on a throwing
error by third baseman Tyler Houston as Drew beat out his second
bunt single.
"The grass is pretty thick there," Drew said. "If you put it
in a good spot, who knows what's going to happen?"
Dave Veres pitched the ninth for 19th save in 24 chances.
The Brewers opened the scoring with two runs in the second
inning. Richie Sexson reached on a throwing error by shortstop
Renteria and Jeromy Burnitz, in a 2-for-23 slump, tripled and
scored on Houston's groundout.
The Cardinals made it 2-1 in a strange third inning in which
they had a leadoff double and three singles but only managed one
run on Clark's run-scoring single.
It could have been a bigger rally but Vina was called out on a
close play trying to stretch his double into a triple. Drew
followed with a single, moved to second on an error by Sexson on a
pickoff play and scored on Clark's hit.
Lankford singled and Renteria, who stranded five runners in his
first two at-bats, flied out to right field.
The Brewers scored two runs in the third on four straight
singles by Ron Belliard, Marquis Grissom, Geoff Jenkins and Sexson,
plus an RBI groundout by Burnitz.
"The way that inning developed, that could have been a really
big inning," La Russa said.
"It's not something we haven't done before," Brewers manager
Davey Lopes said.
Hentgen was lifted in the seventh after issuing two walks. He
was relieved by Gene Stechschulte, who was called up Sunday from
Triple-A Memphis. Stechschulte ended the threat by getting Casanova
to fly to left field.
Wright gave up five runs, 10 hits and four walks in five
innings.
"I never felt comfortable out there," Wright said. "Every
inning was a struggle."
Lopes added, "He just lost it. He was missing by a wide margin
and when he had to throw a strike he threw it right over the middle
of the plate."
Game notes
The Cardinals, who beat Milwaukee 2-1 in 12 innings
Saturday, are the only major league team that is undefeated (4-0)
in extra innings. ... The Brewers are 7-8 in extra-inning games.
... Clark, batting .400 (16-for-40) in 11 games since joining the
Cardinals, got a gift hit in the first inning when his hard
grounder was caught by Wright, who didn't realize the ball was in
his glove and then couldn't find it when it dropped to the ground.
... Wright is 0-4 in six career starts against St. Louis.
