Daal avoids 20th loss for second time

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

CHICAGO (AP) -- Brian Kingman is happy to still be the major league's last 20-game loser.

Omar Daal
Omar Daal's victory means Brian Kingman keeps his dubious honor as the last 20-game loser.

With Kingman watching once again, Daal hit a two-out, two-run double in the second inning as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 10-4 Tuesday night.

Daal (4-19) had been 0-7 in eight starts since defeating San Diego on Aug. 8. He had been scheduled to start Sunday's season finale at Florida, but Phillies manager Terry Francona said after Tuesday's game that a sore right knee would prevent him from pitching against the Marlins.

"At least my last game of the season, I won," Daal said. "I don't have a good record. Four-and-19 is not good. But at least I feel like I was pitching like I was last year."

"I'm proud of him and that's enough," Francona said. "He's done for the year."

Daal wasn't worried about the onus of being a 20-game loser.

"Nineteen or 20 losses is the same," he said. "I read in the paper today that Steve Carlton is a 20-game loser and he was a great pitcher."

Kingman, 46, flew in from Los Angeles for Tuesday's game, bought a $25 ticket in Section 120 behind home plate and cheered for Daal to win.

"I want to remain the last 20-game loser. I enjoy it for some strange reason," said Kingman, who went 8-20 in 1980 for the Oakland Athletics. "I suffered a lot that year."

Kingman also was in the seats last Thursday in Philadelphia when Daal pitched against the New York Mets and didn't get a decision. He had planned on going to Florida if necessary.

Francona had talked to Daal two weeks ago when "Omar fever" kicked in and the left-hander started getting more attention about his losses than his performance.

"I said the last thing I want is for you to get embarrassed," Francona said. "He said, 'I want to pitch.' That's what I wanted to hear."

But Daal's season is over.

"When he gets a deep breath next year, I think he'll be fine," Francona said of Daal, who got his 19th loss against Florida on Sept. 16.

The left-hander gave up two runs and 10 hits in six innings and walked none. He is 1-5 with a 3.14 ERA in his last seven starts.

Sammy Sosa started for the first time in a week for the Cubs and made an error in the first inning when he overran Doug Glanville's single. Sosa, the majors' home run leader with 50, had been sidelined with a muscle strain in his lower back. He went 1-for-4.

Tom Prince had a career high four hits including an RBI double in a six-run ninth, to give the Phillies their second win in the last nine games.

Glanville added an RBI double in the ninth off Jerry Spradlin. With two on and one out, Kevin Jordan hit a ball that flew into the vines on the outfield wall in left. Left fielder Julio Zuleta searched in vain and Jordan, who never stopped running, got the second inside the park home run in three days at Wrigley Field.

It was also the second inside the park homer by a Phillies player this season. Bobby Abreu also did so Aug. 27 against San Francisco.

"It was a rookie mistake," Cubs manager Don Baylor said of Zuleta. "I'm sure he'll never let it happen again. If you go in and dig for it one time, you're done. That's why I didn't argue. I know the ground rules and thought about everyone else knew the ground rules."

Zuleta, starting his fourth game in left field, was panicked.

"I didn't ever see it," he said. "The ball was a little up. I thought it was at the (base of the wall)."

Philadelphia won for just the second time in nine games, sending the Cubs to their 25th loss in 30 games.

Jon Lieber (12-11) gave up four runs and 10 hits in seven innings.

Daal's double put the Phillies ahead. The Cubs hit into double plays in each of the first three innings before Damon Buford's RBI single to close to 2-1.

Run-scoring singles by Johnny Rollins and Jordan made it 4-1 in the fifth.

Zuleta homered in the Cubs' sixth.

Shane Andrews ninth-inning homer brought the score to 10-3.

Game notes
Daal was 2-10 with Arizona before being acquired July 26 in the five-player deal involving Curt Schilling. Daal's only win with the Phillies was a 10-4 victory Aug. 8 over San Diego. ... Phillies 3B Scott Rolen left after one inning because of a stiff lower back. His status was day to day. ... Prince swiped his fourth career stolen base and first since May 19, 1993, in the fifth inning. ... The last Cubs' 20-game loser was Bill Bonham who went 11-22 in 1974.
