Scouting Report

2000 Season
Andrews hit well after signing with the Cubs in September of 1999 and won the third-base job coming out of spring training last spring. He got off to a hot start before going on the disabled list in late May with lower back pain, a chronic problem for him. He underwent surgery in June to repair a herniated disk. He returned in August, reclaimed his third base job (mostly by default), and hit well for the last five weeks of the season.

Hitting
Andrews is strikeout-prone and doesn't hit for much of an average, but he has good power to all fields. Last year he did most of his damage against lefties, though his left-right splits have been more balanced in past years. He likes the ball up and is vulnerable to offspeed pitches. As a flyball hitter, Andrews would seem well-suited to Wrigley Field, but he didn't take much advantage of the friendly confines in 2000. The wind didn't blow out as often as it had in the past, though, and he could receive a boost this year if he remains with the Cubs.

Baserunning & Defense
Normally an above-average fielder, Andrews committed a lot of errors early last season perhaps due in part to his back. An underappreciated glove man in past years, his range now has eroded to the point where he's just average. Andrews has decent hands and a strong throwing arm. He has no speed and advances only by virtue of his bat, not his legs.

2001 Outlook
A free agent at the conclusion of the 2000 season, Andrews probably won't be back with the Cubs. Chicago all but assured his departure when they traded Tim Worrell for San Francisco's Bill Mueller in mid-November, and then did not offer Andrews arbitration. Andrews' encouraging return late last summer may induce another club to pick him up to fill a smaller role, but his days as a regular probably are over.
