RECAP
PEORIA, Arizona (Ticker) -- Jeff Reed did his best imitation of teammate Sammy Sosa, cracking three solo homers to lead a split squad of Chicago Cubs to a 6-4 victory over the San Diego Padres in a Cactus League game. Reed, fighting for playing time at catcher, was 4-for-4, homering twice off starter Brian Meadows and once against Vicente Palacios. Sosa homered twice for the other half of the Cubs' split squad, which defeated the Anaheim Angels, 9-8, in Mesa. Todd Van Poppel, trying to make it back to the majors, was tagged for three runs -- two earned -- and four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in two innings but was credited with the win. Micah Bowie struck out one in a perfect ninth for the save. Carlos Hernandez had a two-run double and a sacrifice fly, Bret Boone was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Chris Gomez had a pair of hits for the Padres. Hernandez missed last season with a torn left Achilles tendon. Matt Whisenant gave up two runs in the seventh and took the loss for San Diego. Carlos Almanzar struck out the side in the eighth and Brandon Kolb pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
