GAME LOG
CHICAGO (AP) Tom Gordon's first win in 2½ years helped the
Cubs take three straight home games against the Dodgers for the
first time in 29 years.
| | | Gary Matthews, left, is greeted by teammates at home plate after scoring the winning run Sunday against the Dodgers. |
Gordon pitched one perfect inning in relief, and ex-Dodger Todd
Hundley drove in the winning run with a ninth-inning single Sunday
as Chicago beat Los Angeles 3-2.
"I was hoping to have a chance soon to get out there," said
Gordon (1-0), whose last win was on Sept. 2, 1998, when he was with
Boston. "My cutter had good breaking-ball bite today."
Gordon, who signed with the Cubs in December, missed all of last
season after reconstructive elbow surgery.
Activated Tuesday, he sat for two games before being used in
mop-up duty Thursday, and complained that he should be used only to
save games. On Sunday, he came in with the game tied in the ninth.
"Today was like a save situation for me," said Gordon, whose
last regular-season save came in May 1999. "Coming in with the
game tied, I still had to hold them so we could come back out."
Said Cubs manager Don Baylor: "Gordon was real good. He was
what we needed today. He got behind on (Eric) Karros but then he
got him out. He carved them up after that."
Rondell White led off the Cubs' ninth with a double off Matt
Herges (1-3), who then intentionally walked Sammy Sosa. Gary
Matthews Jr. went on to run for White, and scored from second on
Hundley's single to left with none out.
Dodgers left fielder Gary Sheffield could not cleanly field the
bloop hit and had no play at the plate.
It's the Cubs' first sweep of a series of three games or more
against the Dodgers at Wrigley Field since June 16-18, 1972.
"First one in how long? Wow, that's nice," Hundley said.
Chicago's Eric Young hit a sacrifice fly off reliever Mike
Fetters in the eighth inning to tie the game 2-2.
Sheffield had put the Dodgers ahead 2-1 with a two-out single in
the eighth.
Marquis Grissom's solo shot in the second inning -- his sixth
homer of the season -- gave Los Angeles its other run.
The Dodgers were outscored 24-1 in the first two games of the
series, including a 20-1 loss Saturday, the worst defeat for the
club since it moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958.
"They shut us down offensively all three days," Dodgers
manager Jim Tracy said.
Dodgers starter Eric Gagne, seeking his first win since April
19, allowed one unearned run on one hit and no walks over seven
innings. He struck out six.
"I wanted to pitch 15 innings if the game was going to go 15
innings," said Gagne, who threw 57 strikes over 88 pitches.
Gagne retired the first nine men he faced, but the Cubs got to
him in the fourth.
Young hit an infield single and advanced to second on third
baseman Jeff Reboulet's throwing error. Ricky Gutierrez reached on
a fielder's choice while advancing Young to third on a bunt. One
out later, Sosa hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 1-1.
Gagne then retired 12 straight batters.
The Dodgers broke the tie in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Chris
Donnels drew a one-out walk, and pinch-runner Tom Goodwin stole
second. Mark Grudzielanek walked, and reliever Kyle Farnsworth
struck out Reboulet.
Sheffield hit Farnsworth's 3-2 pitch into center to score
Goodwin.
Chicago starter Jason Bere allowed two runs on four hits in 7
2-3 innings. He struck out six.
Game notes
Bere has never defeated an NL West opponent in 11 lifetime
appearances. ... Three years ago Sunday, Chicago's Kerry Wood tied
the major league record by striking out 20 Houston Astros in a 2-0
Cubs victory. ... The Cubs have won seven of their 10 series. ...
Gagne had walked 11 hitters in 34 innings coming in.
