Bochy wins 500th as Padres manager
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

CINCINNATI (AP) – Ryan Klesko had a big series, helping Bruce Bochy reach 500 victories as the San Diego Padres' manager.

Ryan Klesko went 2-for-4 with four RBI to help the Padres beat the Reds.

Klesko went 2-for-4 with four RBI as the Padres beat the Reds 8-2 Sunday to complete their first sweep in Cincinnati in nearly three years.

"It's good to finally get something going," said Klesko, who drove in nine runs in the series. "The first couple of weeks, it seemed I was lining out a lot. The balls just weren't finding any holes. This was a good series."

Padres starter Brian Tollberg (3-2) allowed two hits in 5 2/3 innings before leaving the game after being hit on the hand by a comebacker off the bat of Sean Casey in the sixth.

Bochy said Tollberg would not miss his next start.

"It was a stupid thing to do," said Tollberg, who was partly spun around when he tried to field the ball with both hands. "It was instinctive to try to grab it. If I had left that ball go, the shortstop would have got it easy."

Tollberg at first waived off the trainer but then had to be treated. He was bleeding where the fingernail on his middle finger had been jammed.

"At that point it just seemed like a good idea to let the bullpen take over," Tollberg said.

Rodney Myers, Jimmy Ostling and David Lee finished the four-hitter for San Diego.

The loss extended the Reds' losing streak to five games -- the team's longest skid since Aug. 1-6 last season.

The Padres surprised Bochy, who is 500-485 in seven seasons in San Diego, with a champagne drenching after the game.

"It meant a lot to me," the manager said. "The guys were waiting for me. It meant a lot because we've played good ball lately, and then to come in here and get a sweep makes it even more special."

Osvaldo Fernandez (4-2), who had won three straight starts, allowed seven runs on eight hits over 1 2/3 innings. He compounded his problems with some errant fielding in the first.

Rickey Henderson led off the game with a double, extending his hitting streak to 11 games, and scored one out later on Klesko's single to right. Klesko went to second when a return throw from catcher Jason LaRue bounced off Fernandez's glove, and went to third on an infield hit by Dave Magadan that caromed off Fernandez's glove.

Klesko scored on an infield hit by Bubba Trammell to deep short, and the Reds started to hear boos.

Donaldo Mendez led off the second with a single and went to second on Tollberg's sacrifice bunt. Henderson walked, and Mark Kotsay loaded the based on a fielder's choice grounder to short.

Klesko singled to left, driving in two runs, and Magadan followed with a two-run double to the left-field corner. Trammell's RBI single completed the five-run inning.

San Diego loaded the bases again in the third but got only one run, on Klesko's sac fly, to make it 8-0.

The Reds got an unearned run in the fourth on Aaron Boone's sacrifice fly, and one in the ninth on Pokey Reese's RBI single.

Cincinnati manager Bob Boone doesn't plan any pitching changes -- for now.

"We'll go through the rotation again. If it stays the way it stayed the last four days, we might consider (Jim) Brower for a start," Boone said. "I can't believe we'll keep pitching that bad. I know they're better than that. We'll find out."
