Returned to St. Louis, where he won batting title in his last season with the Cardinals (1990) ... Hit .350 in 40 at-bats as a pinch hitter ... Had four hits and three RBI, including the game-winner, on Sept. 2 vs. Houston ... Collected 2,000th career hit on Aug. 8 vs. San Fancisco ... After returning Sept. 11, he suffered another hamstring pull while diving for a ball in the outfield and was deposited back on the DL where he remained.

Second consecutive NL All-Star game appearance ... Placed ninth in the NL with a .292 average, sixth with 164 hits (both led all NL switch-hitters) ... His 49 multi-hit games were fifth best in the NL ... Swiped 41 of 47 bases for an 87 percent success rate (eighth best in the NL) ... Recorded his 1,000 career hit April 26 ... Hit .375 for the Major League All-Star Team that toured Japan at seasons end.

Awarded NL Most Valuable Player by the Baseball Writers Association of America and selected to The Sporting News and UPI All-Star Teams ... His .353 average, 216 hits, and 18 triples led all NL players ... Joined Pete Rose as the only NL switch hitting batting champion at that time ... Won NL Player of the Week honors June 3-9 and awarded NL Player of the Month for Aug. ... Established a record for being gunned down three times while trying to steal during the NL Championship Series against Los Angeles ... Had at least one hit in each of the first five games of the World Series against Kansas City ... Collected second Gold Glove and voted to his first Silver Slugger team.

Hit for the cycle June 23 ... Tore right hamstring and was disabled July 12-27 ... Managed to hit .291 and steal 43 bases in 145 games for the Redbirds.

Initial selection to the NL All-Star squad ... Began the season on the DL after sustaining a separated shoulder during Spring Training ... Was back in action on April 18 ... Had a string of 17-straight steals ... Earned first Gold Glove ... Batted .286 with 39 swipes and 75 RBI in 147 games.

Received call-up from Class AAA Louisville of the American Association in May and won starting center field job with only 13 games of AAA minor league experience under his belt ... His .296 average paced all NL rookies ... Placed third in the Baseball Writers Association of America Rookie of the Year voting ... His first tater was a grand slam on July 20 ... His two triples in a three-game set vs. the Braves established an NLCS record ... Hit two homers in Game 3 of the World Series against the Brewers (a World Series record for homers in a game by a rookie).
