Scouting Report
1999 Season The Mets signed free agent Orel Hershiser to a one-year, $2 million deal in March. They wanted some veteran stability for their rotation, and that's exactly what he provided. While the team's other starters ran hot and cold and fought through injuries, Hershiser quietly contributed six solid innings every fifth day.
Pitching, Defense & Hitting Hershiser's sinker always has been his money pitch, but he rarely hits 90 MPH with it these days. He doesn't rely on it as heavily as he used to. Last year, he made more extensive use of his curveball and changeup, offering curves at varying speeds. Lefthanders give him trouble. He's a master at keeping the ball down and getting groundballs. Hershiser remains a first-rate fielder, though his aggressiveness occasionally leads to errors. He's quick to the plate and basestealers rarely test him. Usually a decent hitter and bunter, he had an off year at the plate last season.
2000 Outlook Hershiser became a free agent again and signed a one-year deal with the Dodgers for $2 million. Though he's 41, he has proven that he still can get by with a good infield behind him. That won't necessarily be the case in Los Angeles.
