Scouting Report

2000 Season
Jeff Reed had an uneventful year as the Cubs' part-time catcher. Playing slightly less often than semi-regular catcher Joe Girardi, Reed slumped, contributing less at the plate than he had in the past.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
What sets Reed apart from most backup catchers is the fact that he bats lefthanded. Although he isn't a particularly strong hitter his main strength at this point is the ability to work a walk he can be used as a pinch-hitter, a role he's filled well. He hasn't faced lefties in years, though. Most of his hits come on line drives over the infield. Reed is about as mobile behind the plate and on the bases as your average 38-year-old catcher. He throws with average strength and accuracy.

2001 Outlook
Reed became a free agent over the winter. Chicago signed Todd Hundley and won't bring Reed back, but he could catch on with a team looking for an experienced backup. At his age, and with his eroding numbers over the last few years, he could be facing the end of the line soon.
