Scouting Report
1999 Season Declaring his free agency after the Expos tried to send him to Triple-A, Mike Maddux signed with the bullpen-challenged Dodgers in late April. After a few weeks tuning up in the minors, he was brought up to the big league club. Aside from closer Jeff Shaw, Maddux was the most consistent reliever on the team.
Pitching, Defense & Hitting While he may not have the best stuff in the world, Maddux, like his younger brother Greg, sure knows how to pitch. He moves the ball around, in and out, up and down, always keeping hitters off balance with his funky delivery. He starts them off with a tight slider, then he'll throw another one and yet another, occasionally mixing in a sinking fastball in the upper 80s. Defensively, Maddux is fundamentally sound, keeps an eye on baserunners and gets rid of the ball quickly. He's ineffective at the plate.
2000 Outlook Maddux has pitched for six different clubs in the last six years, and he's a free agent once again. A true professional, he'll set a good example and serve as a second pitching coach wherever he winds up.
